Sweet Potatoes: What&#8217;s The Difference?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of all the tubers, sweet potatoes are probably my favourite. I add them as a banana replacement in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.befresh.ca\/blog-low-sugar-smoothie\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smoothies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, use them in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">casseroles<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and even add \u2018em to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">veggie burgers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a subtly sweet and thicker consistency. Sometimes recipes call for yams instead of sweet potatoes though, and I always thought they were the same thing. However, after some research, I discovered that I was very, very wrong. <\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>Yams Vs. Sweet Potatoes: What\u2019s the Difference?<\/b><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yams and sweet potatoes are, in fact, very different. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, they have different origins. Yams are native to Africa, Asia, and are now common in Central America and the Caribbean. Sweet potatoes, on the other hand, are grown in the US. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also have very different flavours. Sweet potatoes are, well, sweet. They\u2019re also more moist and juicier than yams. Yams are not sweet: they\u2019re starchy and dry. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for their appearances, again &#8211; not similar. Yams have a white-ish flesh, are bigger and rounder, and are somewhat \u201chairy\u201d on the outside. They\u2019re not the cutest of tubers. Sweet potatoes are what we\u2019re likely used to &#8211; orange or purple or white-ish flesh, and with a narrow shape and tapered ends. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5229 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.befresh.ca\/wrdp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/shutterstock_503696455-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweet potatoes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5230 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.befresh.ca\/wrdp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/shutterstock_430657975-196x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"196\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, sweet potatoes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5231 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.befresh.ca\/wrdp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/shutterstock_250443988-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yep, still sweet potatoes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">THESE are yams:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5232 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.befresh.ca\/wrdp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/shutterstock_341505671-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"344\" height=\"194\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note the \u201chairy\u201d skin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>So, How Did It Get This Way?<\/b><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The yam misnomer likely dates back to the 1920s, if not earlier. The word \u201cyam\u201d is likely derived from various West African languages and made its way over to the US during the slave trade era. When West African people were forcibly moved to the \u201cnew world\u201d, they likely used the term yam to refer to the root vegetable they found in the US: the sweet potato. During the 30\u2019s, US companies\u2019 marketing tactics just stuck with it, and here we are today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Recipes<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some favourite sweet potato &#8211; NOT yam &#8211; recipes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sweet Potato Soup<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This creamy and subtly sweet soup will make you forget alll about the yams vs. sweet potatoes debate.<\/p>\n<p>Ingredients:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 tbsp coconut oil<\/li>\n<li>1\/4 tsp pepper<\/li>\n<li>4 cups broth<\/li>\n<li>2 tbsp minced fresh parsley<\/li>\n<li>1 onion chopped<\/li>\n<li>2 cloves garlic, minced<\/li>\n<li>3 sweet potatoes peeled and cubed (2 lbs;)<\/li>\n<li>1\/4 tsp salt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Instructions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In a large saucepan, heat oil over medium heat, saute garlic, onion, salt and pepper until softened, about 3 mins.<\/li>\n<li>Add sweet potatoes and stock. Bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer until potatoes are tender &#8211; about 20 mins.<\/li>\n<li>Puree soup until smooth. Return to clean saucepan and heat through.<\/li>\n<li>Top with chopped parsley.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><b>Mashed Yams (Fufu)<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a common west African dish. It\u2019s slightly similar to mashed potatoes, but with a thicker consistency. Try rolling it up into balls and dipping it into soup &#8211; it&#8217;s delicious. Cassava can also replace white yams for this recipe. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ingredients:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 pounds cassava or white yams<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 tbsp butter (or vegan butter)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Salt and pepper<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optional: flavour with various spices. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instructions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Place un-peeled yams in a large pot, cover with cold water and bring to a boil.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boil for 15-30 minutes, or until yams are cooked thoroughly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drain. Let cool.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peel the yams and chop into large pieces. Place them in a large bowl with the butter and S&amp;P. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mash well until smooth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Place in a bowl and, with a bit of water, begin to roll it into balls. It\u2019s common to dip the balls into soups or sauces. Makes 4-6 servings. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So in conclusion, all those sweet potato-y type root veggies that you once thought were yams&#8230; are not. Unless you\u2019ve eaten yams in African or Asian countries, there\u2019s a very good chance you\u2019ve actually never tried a true yam &#8211; at least not in Canada or the US. They\u2019re alllll sweet potatoes over here. That being said, it\u2019s still incredibly common to use the term yam when referring to orange-fleshed sweet potatoes. So common, that at SPUD and Be Fresh we even use &#8220;yam&#8221; to describe these misunderstood tubers. \u00a0Sometimes it\u2019s less confusing to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But enough of the semantics. Call your tubers whatever you like, but at least now you\u2019re informed.
