A huge one actually. Did you know that we waste $31 billion in food each year? That\u2019s almost 40% of all food produced. Even more shockingly, 47% of food waste comes from homes &#8211; not from hotel and restaurant chains, or corporations as you might think. So while we might blame this problem on big companies, most of it comes right back to the kitchen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay okay, now that the depressing stats are out of the way, what can we do about this issue? Clearly, it\u2019s something we can all work together on. Here at Be Fresh, low food waste is important to us. Here\u2019s how we try to keep our food footprint low.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 21px;\">How We Reduce Our Food Waste.<\/span><\/h1>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><b>Donations.<\/b><\/span><\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>The Foodstash Foundation.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They pick up any day-old foods that typically would head to the landfill and deliver them to different charities around Vancouver. Read more on this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.spud.com\/blog-food-stash\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Union Gospel Mission.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Similar to Foodstash, any day-old (but still edible!) food goes to those in need. The UGM serves 3 nutritious meals a day with many foods coming from us and other local Vancouver producers. Read more on this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ugm.ca\/services\/meals-outreach\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Our Products.<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you tried our <\/span><b>Pea-Nomenal Dip<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> yet? If you have, you\u2019ll know it\u2019s pretty darn tasty. Not only that, it\u2019s made with our leftover almond pulp from our in-house almond milk. (We make a lotta milk, which means there\u2019s a lotta pulp. Perfect for our tasty dips!) Other works in progress for our almond pulp include granola, vegan cheese, and crackers.<\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5165 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.befresh.ca\/wrdp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Be-Fresh-Trio-Dips-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Above. Our Pea-nomenal\u00a0Dip on the left, and our other popular dips on the right.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some other low-waste products we make are:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Our Pea-Nomenal Protein Wrap.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yes, using our Pea-Nomenal Dip. It\u2019s low-waste and also SO GOOD. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.befresh.ca\/blog-broth-bar\/\"><b>Broth bar.<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bone broth is great because it uses up allll of the animal, not just the meat. Normally the bones would get tossed out, but our broth turns those into a tasty, comforting beverage. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Chaga foam.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You know the indescribably delectable foam that goes on top of our broth lattes? Well that\u2019s made from aquafaba, the \u201cwater\u201d from canned chickpeas, which conveniently turns into a thick foam when blended. We use the chickpeas for our in-house hummus and use the water for the foam. No waste there. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Soups. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some remaining juice pulp also goes into our soups! These soups are always changing, but the most notable one is our Thai Carrot. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Zero-waste ketchup.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is a work in progress but should be in place come summertime. There are tons of too-ripe, imperfect tomatoes that we can\u2019t sell, so those will become our house ketchup.
