No, it\u2019s not a new superfood that\u2019s popped up on the market (we\u2019re looking at you, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.spud.com\/blog-activated-charcoal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">charcoal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). We\u2019re talking about taking your smoothies to the next level health-wise: incorporating veggies to make a low-sugar smoothie.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gone are the days when it was supposedly a good thing to eat 10 bananas a day. Now people are realizing that sugar isn\u2019t so great, and that includes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sugars &#8211; even the ones in fruit. We\u2019re not saying cut out fruit entirely, we love the stuff! All we\u2019re saying is to enjoy it in moderation (and if you\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.spud.com\/blog-quit-sugar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trying to quit sugar altogether, we got you covered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). At least for me, too much sugar\/fruit makes my energy spike and crash, causes brain fog, and oftentimes leads to a migraine. It\u2019s never fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To cut back on my sugar consumption, I\u2019ve started prioritizing low-sugar meals. I try adding veggies to any meal possible, which includes breakfast smoothies. Here\u2019s my formula for the perfect veggie-laden, low-sugar smoothie.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The Perfect Low-Sugar Smoothie Formula<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Replace high-sugar fruits with veggies. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m mostly referring to fruits like bananas, apples, and pears here. Try replacing bananas with veggies like f<\/span>rozen <strong>cauliflower<\/strong>, steamed then frozen <strong>sweet potato<\/strong>, or steamed then frozen <strong>zucchini<\/strong>.\u00a0It might sound weird, but they all have a neutral flavour, add a surprisingly creamy texture, and have a low-glycemic index so they\u2019ll keep your energy stable (no more crashes!). And they still make your smoothie taste GREAT. Promise.<\/li>\n<li><b>Add low-sugar fruits.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Let\u2019s face it, an all-veggie smoothie isn\u2019t all that appealing. Try incorporating low-sugar fruits like antioxidant-rich berries such as blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. The darker the better. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Add healthy fats. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We love nut butter like PB, almond butter, or hazelnut butter, but also healthy-fat rich foods like coconut butter, flax seeds, chia seeds,\u00a0 and hemp hearts. Not only do they add extra creaminess, but they keep you feelin\u2019 full \u2018til lunch. Feel free to top your smoothie with pumpkin seeds or a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.spud.com\/blog-fat-bomb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fat Bomb<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Load up on the greens!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Green smoothies are obviously a thing (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winter green smoothie<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> anyone?). For a low-sugar one, simply add more. I love frozen spinach or fresh kale. They\u2019re an especially great combo with blueberries. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Don\u2019t take water for granted. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people load up on almond milk in smoothies. I love adding almond milk to make it ultra creamy, but honestly, replacing it with water doesn\u2019t make much of a difference. Next time you\u2019re making your smoothie, try adding half water and half almond milk. Not only will it save you some $$ (almond milk ain\u2019t cheap!), but you might not notice a difference taste-wise. It also cuts back on any potentially hidden sugars in commercial almond milk.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sugar is not the enemy, but it\u2019s something to keep an eye on. We still recommend enjoying a decadent chocolate cake, savouring some locally made ice cream, or feasting on nice fresh fruit every once in a while, but if your body is saying NO DON\u2019T FEED ME SUGAR on a day-to-day basis, then maybe take some hints. Veggies in smoothies might just be your new favourite hack.
