If you\u2019re like me, I always manage to catch an annual cold. It usually sneaks up on me when I\u2019m stressed or busy. This was especially the case in university. Whenever I\u2019d get sick (which was a lot &#8211; university was stressful), I\u2019d run to my next-door corner store, grab a 2L of orange juice, and browse Google for a \u201cnatural immune-boosting tonic\u201d. After enough colds and an OJ overload, I ended up formulating my own immune-boosting tonic recipe: it\u2019s the only thing that really helped! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s an immune-boosting tonic, you ask? Well, it\u2019s pretty self-explanatory: it\u2019s a concentrated combo of immune boosting foods. Each food has its own healing properties to address specific cold symptoms. I like ginger, turmeric, apple cider vinegar, cayenne pepper, and honey. Ginger helps with respiratory viruses (like clearing a cough and sniffles), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.spud.com\/blog-turmeric\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turmeric is a straight-up immunity superhero<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (but specifically helps with clearing respiratory infections and boosting overall immunity), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.spud.com\/blog-apple-cider-vinegar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apple cider vinegar helps thin out mucus and balance your body\u2019s pH levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cayenne pepper also thins out mucus and brings your body temperature down, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.spud.com\/blog-honey\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manuka honey is antiviral, antibacterial and specifically helps with a sore throat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Mix these with hot water and boom. So long, cold.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><strong><span style=\"font-size: 18px;\">Immune-Boosting Tonic\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Ingredients: <\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 cup water<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00bc tsp raw grated ginger<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00bc tsp turmeric (either choose <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raw<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">powdered organic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 tsp apple cider vinegar<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dash cayenne pepper<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 tsp honey<\/span><\/li>\n<li><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optional<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: lemon. Lemon is rich in vitamin C and just tastes great. I\u2019d recommend it! Try adding \u00bd a lemon.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optional<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: garlic. One time when I was going hard with the tonics, I tried adding garlic for its antibacterial properties. It didn\u2019t taste great and it wasn\u2019t enjoyable, so I wouldn\u2019t necessarily recommend it. However, if you\u2019re either really sick or feeling bold, go for it. \u00bd a clove is more than enough.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Instructions:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add the water, turmeric, apple cider vinegar, ginger, lemon or garlic if using, and cayenne pepper to a pot and bring to a boil. Do not add the honey yet! It will kill all of its active ingredients, which is not what you want.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once the mix has boiled, let it simmer for 10-12 minutes. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strain and add the honey. If you\u2019re sniffly, breathe in the concoction at this point! The cayenne will work its magic.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sip away! Bye bye cold. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How else do you push through a cold? Other ways for me are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.spud.com\/blog-work-out-sick\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">light exercise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a neti pot<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/about.spud.com\/blog-probiotics-common-cold\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loading up on probiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Also, if you\u2019re really down in the dumps, take a rest day! If you try and push through without giving your body what it needs &#8211; which is likely a break &#8211; it will only get worse, and likely infect your coworkers too. Speaking from experience, no one wants that.
