New Product: Be Fresh Fake-O-Baco

What is Fake-O-Baco, you ask? Well, it’s fake bacon. Unlike other vegan bacon, it’s made out of beans – not tofu or rice paper like most homemade recipes are, or weird unpronounceable ingredients like store-bought ones are. I love tofu, but sometimes the soy-overload doesn’t sit well with me. Rice paper versions taste great, but they’re not high in nutritional value, and sometimes are too crunchy. And the weird store-bought ones are just weird.

So, what is it exactly?

Our Fake-o-Baco is made mostly of adzuki beans, following with buckwheat groats, tomato paste, hickory smoke, maple syrup, tamari, and some other seasonings. It’s definitely nutrient-dense. It’s also got that classic bacon sweet/savoury taste and that nostalgic bacon smell that reminds us of Sunday morning brunch. So basically, it’s just like bacon, but without the whole meat thing.

How do you eat it?

First, to make it, simply heat it up in a pan. It’s regularly dense and chewy, and frying it gives it that undying crunch that bacon-lovers far and wide will appreciate. To eat it, try adding it to sandwiches, salads, scrambles, wraps, or enjoying it as a stand-alone snack. It’s that good.

In the end, while nothing can replicate meat-based bacon, you’ll love our Fake-o-Baco even if you’re a committed carnivore. We promise. Find it from SPUD.ca or at any of our markets!
